How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

かていさいえんのたのしみ

ことしのなつ、わたしはにわのすみにちいさなかていさいえんをつくることにした。きんじょのおばさんのはなしによると、トマトはみずをやりすぎるとあまみがへってしまうそうだ。まいあさみずをやるたびに、やさいのせいちょうをかくにんするのがたのしみになった。すこしずつけいけんをつんだおかげで、きゅうりもじょうずにそだてられるようになった。きょうははじめてしゅうかくしたトマトをたべてみたところ、おもったいじょうにあまくておいしかった。

文法

  • 「~によると」は情報じょうほうの出でどころを示しめす表現ひょうげんで、「~が言いうところによれば」という意味いみを表あらわす。
  • 「~たびに」は「~するときはいつも」という意味いみで、繰くり返かえされる出来事できごとを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「~おかげで」は、あることが原因げんいんでよい結果けっかが生うまれたことを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。「~ようになった」と組くみ合あわせることで、努力どりょくや経験けいけんによって新あたらしくできるようになったことを表あらわす。
  • 「~てみたところ」は「~してみたら」という意味いみで、実際じっさいに何なにかを試こころみた結果けっか、新あたらしい発見はっけんや結果けっかがあったことを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。

The Joy of a Home Vegetable Garden

This summer, I decided to start a small vegetable garden in the corner of my yard. According to a neighbor lady, if you give tomatoes too much water, they lose their sweetness. Every morning when I water the plants, checking on the vegetables' growth has become something I look forward to. Thanks to gradually gaining experience, I've become able to grow cucumbers well too. Today, when I tried eating the tomato I harvested for the first time, it was sweeter and more delicious than I expected.

  • 「~によると」cites the source of information, meaning 'according to ~'.
  • 「~たびに」means 'every time ~ happens', expressing a recurring situation.
  • 「~おかげで」expresses a positive result caused by something, meaning 'thanks to ~'. Combined with 「~ようになった」, it shows that effort or experience led to a newly acquired ability.
  • 「~てみたところ」means 'when I tried ~, it turned out that...', used to introduce a discovery or result after trying something.
