The Paperback in the Corner

In a corner of the library, a single paperback sat with its spine so sun-faded the title was unreadable. I picked it up and started turning the pages, and before I knew it, an hour had passed. The return deadline for the book is apparently set for three days from now, and I'm not confident I can finish it in time. It's not as though I'm particularly good at reading, yet somehow only this old story draws me in in a strange way. I found myself thinking that someone must have left it here on purpose.

  • 〜ているうちに: expresses that while doing something continuously, a change or realization gradually occurs. Here it describes how, in the midst of reading, one becomes absorbed.
  • 〜ことになっている: indicates a rule, arrangement, or expectation that has been established (often by external circumstances or convention), not purely by personal decision.
  • 〜に違いない: expresses strong conviction or deduction — the speaker is confident something must be the case.
  • 〜わけではない: a partial negation meaning 'it's not that ~' or 'it doesn't mean ~', used to soften or qualify a statement rather than deny it outright.
