Sentō: Then and Now
Sentō are public bathhouses found throughout Japan, and in the era when many homes did not have their own bath, they were used by a great many people. However, in response to changes in housing conditions, the number of sentō has been decreasing year by year. Even so, there are still quite a few sentō that are valued as places where people in the community can meet face to face. It is considered proper manners to wash one's body before getting into the tub, and if this is not observed, there is a risk of causing trouble to other bathers. According to an elderly person in the neighborhood, in the past many people used to go every night on their way home from work.
