How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

ひきだしのなかのメモ

たむらさんは、あさ、つくえのひきだしをあけたとき、みおぼえのないメモをみつけた。そこには「ありがとう」というひとことだけがかかれていて、だれがおいたのかわからないままだった。どうりょうにきいてみたが、だれもこころあたりがないという。いそがしいひにかぎってふしぎなことがおこると、たむらさんはおもわずわらってしまった。けっきょく、そのメモをひきだしのおくにしまい、はんにんをさがすのはやめることにした。

文法

  • 「〜まま」は、ある状態じょうたいが変かわらずに続つづいていることを表あらわす表現ひょうげんで、ここでは「分わからないままだった」のように、疑問ぎもんが解決かいけつされない状態じょうたいが続つづいたことを示しめす。
  • 「〜に限かぎって」は、他たの場合ばあいではなく、その時ときや場合ばあいに限かぎって、特とくに良よくないことが起おこる、というニュアンスを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜ことにした」は、話はなし手て自身じしんが考かんがえた末すえに、そうすると決きめたことを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。

The Note in the Drawer

One morning, when Tamura opened his desk drawer, he found a note he didn't recognize. On it was written just the words 'thank you,' and he had no idea who had left it. He asked his coworkers, but no one had any clue either. He couldn't help but laugh at the thought that strange things happen precisely on busy days. In the end, he decided to tuck the note away in the back of the drawer and give up trying to find out who had left it.

  • 〜まま expresses that a certain state continues unchanged, as in 「分からないままだった」('it remained unknown'), showing that a question stayed unresolved.
  • 〜に限って means 'of all times/cases, precisely this one', often used to express that something unfortunate happens specifically at that particular time.
  • 〜ことにした expresses that the speaker (or subject) made a decision to do something after consideration.
