How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

カラスはひとのかおをおぼえているのか

さいきんのけんきゅうによれば、カラスはひとのかおをみわけるのうりょくをもっているらしい。あるだいがくのじっけんでは、いぜんいじわるをしたひとがちかづくと、カラスはけいかいしてなくという。からだはちいさいにもかかわらず、きおくりょくはおどろくほどたかいようだ。けんきゅうしゃは、むれでくらすカラスだけに、なかまどうしできけんなじんぶつのじょうほうをつたえあっているのではないかとかんがえている。こののうりょくが、としでのカラスのいきのこりにやくだっているともいわれている。

文法

  • 「〜にもかかわらず」は「〜なのに」という意味いみで、前まえの事柄ことがらから予想よそうされる内容ないようとは逆ぎゃくの結果けっかが起おこることを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜だけに」は、ある特別とくべつな事情じじょうや立場たちばが理由りゆうで、当然とうぜんそうなる、という気持きもちを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜のではないかと考かんがえている」は、断定だんていを避さけ、そうかもしれないという推測すいそくを柔やわらかく述のべる表現ひょうげん。

Do Crows Remember Human Faces?

According to recent research, crows apparently have the ability to distinguish human faces. In an experiment at a certain university, it is said that when a person who had previously treated them unkindly approaches, the crows caw as if on guard. Despite their small bodies, their memory seems to be surprisingly good. Researchers think that, precisely because crows live in flocks, they may be sharing information about dangerous individuals among themselves. It is also said that this ability helps crows survive in cities.

  • 「~にもかかわらず」means 'despite ~' or 'even though ~', expressing that a result contrary to what would be expected from the preceding fact occurs.
  • 「~だけに」means 'precisely because ~', expressing that a certain special circumstance naturally leads to a particular outcome.
  • 「~のではないかと考えている」is used to softly express a speculation or hypothesis while avoiding a definite assertion, meaning 'one thinks that it might be ~'.
