How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

えほんをかうきゃく

えきまえのちいさなほんやをさんじゅうねんいじょういとなんでいるたぐちさんには、わすれられないきゃくがいる。そのだんせいはまいねんじゅうにがつになるとおなじえほんをいっさつかいにくる。あるひ、たぐちさんがりゆうをたずねると、むかしなくしたむすめがそのほんをすきだったのだという。はなしをきいてはじめて、たぐちさんはそのしずかなえがおのおくにあるさびしさにきづいた。それからは、かれがみせにくるたびに、おもわずやさしいことばをかけずにはいられなくなった。

文法

  • 「〜てはじめて」は、あることをした後あとで、初はじめてある事実じじつに気きづいたり理解りかいしたりすることを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜ずにはいられない」は、自分じぶんの意志いしではおさえられず、自然しぜんにそうしてしまう気持きもちを表あらわす表現ひょうげんで、「〜しないでいることができない」という意味いみ。
  • 「〜のだ」は、理由りゆうや事情じじょうを説明せつめいするときに使つかわれる表現ひょうげんで、ここでは「〜のだと言いう」の形かたちで、他たの人ひとから聞きいた説明せつめいを伝つたえている。

The Customer Who Buys a Picture Book

Mr. Taguchi, who has run a small bookstore in front of the station for over thirty years, has a customer he can never forget. Every year, when December comes, the man comes in to buy the same picture book. One day, when Mr. Taguchi asked him why, the man explained that his daughter, who had passed away long ago, used to love that book. It was only after hearing this that Mr. Taguchi realized the loneliness hidden behind that quiet smile. Since then, whenever the man comes to the shop, Mr. Taguchi cannot help but offer him a few kind words.

  • 「~てはじめて」means 'only after ~ (did I realize/understand)', expressing that a fact was noticed or understood only after a certain experience took place.
  • 「~ずにはいられない」means 'cannot help but ~', expressing that one is unable to suppress an urge and naturally ends up doing something.
  • 「~のだ」is used to explain a reason or circumstance; here in the form 「~のだと言う」 it conveys an explanation that was heard from someone else.
