How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

しゅっちょうのけいかく

なかむら:「さとうさん、らいしゅうのきょうとしゅっちょう、もうホテルはきめましたか。」 さとう:「まだです。よやくサイトをみているんですが、えきからちかいところはどこもたかくて。」 なかむら:「それなら、かいしゃがていけいしているホテルがありますよ。よやくがかくていしだい、たんとうしゃにれんらくしてください。」 さとう:「たすかります。では、よやくするついでに、ちかくのおすすめのみせもきいてもいいですか。」 なかむら:「もちろんです。やすいどころか、あじもほんとうによいみせをしっていますよ。」

文法

  • 「〜次第しだい」は動詞どうしの語幹ごかんについて「〜したらすぐに」という意味いみを表あらわし、あることが終おわった直後ちょくごに次つぎの行動こうどうを取とることを示しめす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜ついでに」は「〜する機会きかいを利用りようして、それに加くわえて」という意味いみで、主おもな行動こうどうを行おこなう機会きかいを利用りようして、別べつのことも一緒いっしょに行おこなうことを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜どころか」は「〜とは程遠ほどとおく、それどころか反対はんたいに」という意味いみで、予想よそうや前提ぜんていを強つよく否定ひていし、それとは逆ぎゃくの意外いがいな事実じじつを述のべる表現ひょうげん。

Planning a Business Trip

Nakamura: "Sato, have you decided on a hotel for next week's business trip to Kyoto yet?" Sato: "Not yet. I've been looking at booking sites, but every place near the station is expensive." Nakamura: "In that case, there's a hotel our company has a partnership with. As soon as the reservation is confirmed, please contact the person in charge." Sato: "That helps a lot. Well, while I'm making the reservation, could I also ask you about a good restaurant nearby?" Nakamura: "Of course. Far from being just cheap, I know a place where the food is genuinely delicious too."

  • 「~次第」attached to a verb stem means 'as soon as ~', expressing that another action will be taken immediately after the first one is completed.
  • 「~ついでに」means 'while doing ~, also ~' or 'taking the opportunity of ~', expressing that a secondary action is done by making use of the occasion of a main action.
  • 「~どころか」means 'far from ~' or 'not only not ~, but on the contrary', used to strongly contradict an expectation and present a surprising or opposite fact.
