How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

ふるいいえからみつかったてがみ

せんしゅう、ほくりくちほうのあるまちで、かいたいこうじちゅうのふるいいえのかべのなかから、すうじゅうつうのてがみがみつかった。てがみはめいじじだいにかかれたものとみられ、とうじこのまちにすんでいたしょうにんのくらしがくわしくしるされている。しのしりょうによると、このいえはまちのはってんにかかわったじんぶつのじゅうきょだったという。せんもんかはてがみのないようをもとに、とうじのしょうぎょうのようすをしらべていくよていで、このはっけんがじもとのれきしけんきゅうをすすめるおおきないっぽになるとみられている。

文法

  • 「〜と見みられる」は、断定だんていを避さけ、一般的いっぱんてきに「〜だろう」と考かんがえられていることを表あらわす、報道ほうどうなどでよく使つかわれる表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜をもとに」は、ある情報じょうほうや資料しりょうを基礎きそ・材料ざいりょうとして、次つぎの行動こうどうや判断はんだんを行おこなうことを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜ていく」は、動作どうさや変化へんかが今いまから将来しょうらいに向むかって続つづいていくことを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。

Letters Found in an Old House

Last week, in a town in the Hokuriku region, dozens of letters were found inside the wall of an old house during demolition work. The letters are believed to have been written in the Meiji era, and they record in detail the life of a merchant who lived in the town at that time. According to city records, the house was the residence of a person involved in the town's development. Based on the contents of the letters, experts plan to continue investigating what commerce was like back then, and this discovery is seen as a major step forward for local historical research.

  • 「~と見られる」means 'is believed to be ~' or 'is regarded as ~', a somewhat formal expression commonly used in news reporting to state a widely held view while avoiding a definite assertion.
  • 「~をもとに」means 'based on ~', expressing that certain information or material serves as the foundation for a following action or judgment.
  • 「~ていく」expresses that an action or change will continue on from now into the future.
