How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

かさたてのルール

きむら:「さとうさん、かさたてにおいてあったかさ、しりませんか。あさからさがしているんですが。」 さとう:「ああ、それならそうむかのひとがかたづけてくれましたよ。わすれものがおおいからと、せんしゅうからなまえをかくようにいわれているんです。」 きむら:「えっ、そうだったんですね。ぜんぜんきづきませんでした。」 さとう:「わたしもさいしょはめんどうだとおもいましたが、おかげでじぶんのかさがすぐみつかるようになりました。」 きむら:「なるほど。こんどからきをつけます。」

文法

  • 「〜てくれる」は、他人たにんが自分じぶんや身内みうちのために何なにかをしてくれたことを表あらわす表現ひょうげんで、感謝かんしゃの気持きもちを含ふくむことが多おおい。
  • 「〜ように言いわれる」は、他ほかの人ひとから指示しじや命令めいれいを受うけたことを表あらわす表現ひょうげんで、「〜しなさいと言いわれた」という意味いみに近ちかい。
  • 「おかげで」は、良よい結果けっかにつながった原因げんいんや助たすけを表あらわす表現ひょうげんで、「〜のせいで良よいことが起おこった」という意味いみを持もつ。

The Umbrella Stand Rule

Kimura: "Sato-san, do you know what happened to the umbrella that was in the umbrella stand? I've been looking for it since this morning." Sato: "Oh, the general affairs staff put it away. Since there have been a lot of lost items, we've been told to write our names on our umbrellas since last week." Kimura: "Oh, really? I hadn't noticed at all." Sato: "I thought it was a hassle at first too, but thanks to it, I can find my own umbrella right away now." Kimura: "I see. I'll be careful from now on."

  • ~てくれる expresses that someone did something for the speaker's (or an in-group member's) benefit, often carrying a nuance of gratitude.
  • ~ように言われる expresses that one was instructed or told to do something by someone else, close in meaning to 'was told to ~'.
  • おかげで expresses a cause or help that led to a good result, meaning 'thanks to ~'.
