How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

まちにヤギがやってきた

せんしゅう、しずおかけんのあるまちで、ざっそうたいさくとしてヤギをかうとりくみがはじまった。やくばのたんとうしゃによると、これまでひとででおこなっていたくさかりさぎょうに、おおくのじかんとひようがかかっていたという。そこで、じょそうのたんとうとしてヤギさんとうをどうにゅうしたところ、わずかいっしゅうかんであきちのくさがほとんどなくなったそうだ。このけっかをうけ、きんりんのまちでもどうようのとりくみがひろがりつつある。

文法

  • 「〜として」は、ある立場たちばや役割やくわりを示しめす表現ひょうげんで、「〜の立場たちばで」「〜の役割やくわりで」という意味いみを持もつ。
  • 「〜たところ」は、ある動作どうさを行おこなった結果けっか、新あたらしく分わかったことや起おこったことを述のべる表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜つつある」は、ある変化へんかが今いままさに進行しんこうしている、少すこしずつ進すすんでいることを表あらわす、やや硬かたい書かき言葉ことば的てき表現ひょうげん。

Goats Come to Town

Last week, a town in Shizuoka Prefecture began an effort to control weeds by keeping goats. According to a town office official, the weeding that had previously been done by hand required a great deal of time and money. So when three goats were introduced to handle the weeding, within just one week almost all the grass on the vacant lot had disappeared, it is said. Following this result, similar efforts are spreading to neighboring towns as well.

  • 「~として」indicates a role, capacity, or status, meaning 'as ~' or 'in the capacity of ~'.
  • 「~たところ」means 'when one did ~' or 'as a result of doing ~', introducing something newly discovered or that happened as a consequence of an action.
  • 「~つつある」expresses that a change is currently in progress or gradually advancing, a somewhat formal, written-style expression meaning 'is in the process of ~ing'.
