Tips for Watering Bonsai

Bonsai pots are small, which makes managing water especially important. If you overwater, the roots will rot, so the basic rule is to check that the surface soil has dried before giving it a thorough watering—enough that water runs out from the bottom of the pot. Because the number of times you need to water changes depending on the season and temperature, it's not simply a matter of watering at the same time every day. Carefully observing how the plant looks and gradually finding your own pace is the secret to growing bonsai for a long time.

  • "~分" expresses a degree or reason arising from the preceding fact, meaning 'given that ~, correspondingly ~' or 'to the extent that ~', a somewhat formal expression.
  • "~次第で" means 'depending on ~', expressing that the outcome changes according to a certain condition or circumstance.
  • "~というものではない" negates a commonly assumed idea, conveying that things are not necessarily so simple, meaning 'it's not (simply) a matter of ~'.
