How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

おんせんまちのあしゆさくせん

ながのけんのあるおんせんまちで、あたらしいかんこうきゃくむけのあしゆがちゅうもくをあつめている。あしゆにつかりながらけしきをたのしめることにくわえて、むりょうでりようできるてんがりょこうしゃにこうひょうだ。いっぽう、かんこうきゃくがふえたはんめん、こんざつやタオルのつかいすてによるごみのもんだいもしょうじている。このたいさくをめぐって、まちのかいぎではりようじかんをせいげんすべきだといういけんもでているという。

文法

  • 「〜に加くわえて」は、ある事柄ことがらに、さらに別べつの事柄ことがらを付つけ加くわえることを表あらわす表現ひょうげんで、「〜だけでなく、それに加くわえて」という意味いみを持もつ。
  • 「〜反面はんめん」は、一ひとつの事柄ことがらについて述のべた後あと、それと対照的たいしょうてきな、あるいは正反対せいはんたいの側面そくめんを付つけ加くわえる表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜をめぐって」は、ある話題わだいや問題もんだいを中心ちゅうしんとして、それについての議論ぎろんや意見いけんの対立たいりつなどが起おこることを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。

In a hot spring town in Nagano Prefecture, a new foot bath for tourists is attracting attention. On the other hand, as the number of tourists has increased, problems such as crowding and garbage from disposable towels have also arisen. Regarding these countermeasures, it is said that at town meetings, some have also voiced the opinion that usage hours should be limited.

  • ~に加えて means 'in addition to ~', adding another element on top of what has already been mentioned.
  • ~反面 means 'while on the other hand ~', used to add a contrasting or opposite aspect after stating one side of something.
  • ~をめぐって means 'regarding ~' or 'surrounding ~', indicating that a discussion, dispute, or various opinions revolve around a particular topic or issue.
