The Umbrella at the Bus Stop

At the bus stop in front of the station, there's always one old umbrella left there. I later learned that Suzuki-san, who lives nearby, puts it there every morning so that people caught in the rain can use it. Oddly enough, it seems that of all days, the umbrella sometimes can't be found on rainy days. Someone probably borrows it and never returns it, but Suzuki-san doesn't seem to mind, and apparently prepares a new one the very next day. To think there are people willing to lose their own umbrella just to help others—how admirable that is.

  • ~に限って means 'of all times, precisely when ~', expressing that something inconvenient happens at just the worst possible moment, often carrying a sense of frustration or surprise.
  • ~てしまう expresses that an action is completed, and here it conveys that Suzuki-san readily and without hesitation prepares a new umbrella.
  • ~ものだ expresses the speaker's deeply felt impression about something, or a general sense that something is naturally the case, often used to convey emotional emphasis.
