How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

まいごのいぬをさがしています

8はちがつ5いつかのゆうがた、ちかくのこうえんでしろいいぬがいなくなりました。なまえはモモで、まだこさくて、ひとをみるとすぐしっぽをふります。くびにはあかいリボンをつけています。もしみかけたら、しものでんわばんごうにれんらくしてください。かぞくはとてもしんぱいしています。どうかちからをかしてください。

文法

  • 〜と：ある条件じょうけんがある時とき、いつも同おなじ結果けっかになることを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。「人ひとを見みるとすぐしっぽを振ふります」は「人ひとを見みる度たびに必かならずしっぽを振ふる」という意味いみ。
  • 〜てください：相手あいてに何なにかをするよう丁寧ていねいに頼たのむ表現ひょうげん。「連絡れんらくしてください」は「連絡れんらくすることを頼たのむ」という意味いみ。
  • 〜ている（状態じょうたい）：過去かこの動作どうさの結果けっかが今いまも続つづいている状態じょうたいを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。「つけています」は「今いまもリボンがついている」という意味いみ。

Looking for a Lost Dog

On the evening of August 5th, a white dog disappeared from the park nearby. Her name is Momo, she's still small, and she wags her tail right away whenever she sees a person. She has a red ribbon around her neck. If you happen to see her, please call the phone number below. My family is very worried. Please, lend us your help.

  • 〜と: used to describe a condition that always leads to the same natural result. Here, 「人(ひと)を見(み)るとすぐしっぽを振(ふ)ります」means 'whenever it sees a person, it immediately wags its tail.'
  • 〜てください: a polite request form asking someone to do something. Here, 「連絡(れんらく)してください」means 'please contact us.'
  • 〜ている (state/result): describes a continuing state resulting from a past action. Here, 「つけています」means the dog currently has the ribbon on.
