Memories at the Sea

Every summer, my family and I make it a habit to go swimming at the beach. According to a neighbor, the sea water is warm this year, making it easy to swim. Although the waves were high, the children played energetically without being scared. Thanks to practicing many times, my little sister has become able to swim better than last year. Every time we come back from the sea, everyone is tanned dark from the sun. Next year, I plan to go to the same place again.

  • 「~によると」cites the source of information, meaning 'according to ~'.
  • 「~ものの」expresses a concession, meaning 'although ~' — the first clause is true, but it doesn't lead to the expected result in the second clause.
  • 「~おかげで」expresses a positive result caused by something, meaning 'thanks to ~'. Combined with 「~ようになった」, it shows that effort or a good cause led to a newly acquired ability.
  • 「~たびに」means 'every time ~ happens', expressing a recurring situation.
