The Station's Local Celebrity

Last month, a brown tabby cat took up residence at an unmanned train station in a small town with a population of under a thousand. Nicknamed the "stationmaster" by the locals, the cat reportedly comes out onto the platform every time a train arrives to see off the passengers. After its appearance became a topic on social media, more and more tourists have reportedly been making the trip from far away just to see it. Although the town's population is small, thanks to this cat, the number of station users is certainly increasing.

  • "〜によって" marks the agent, cause, or means in a passive sentence. Here it shows that it is the local people who call the cat "stationmaster."
  • "〜たびに" means "every time ~," expressing that the same thing happens repeatedly whenever a certain action occurs.
  • "〜ことから" expresses that a certain fact or event serves as the cause or trigger leading to the following result.
  • "〜ものの" is a somewhat formal/written expression similar to "〜けれども," indicating that what follows contrasts with or goes against what was just stated.

A New Way of Working

Long time no see. How are you doing? Actually, starting next month, my company has decided to try a four-day workweek system. At first I worried that I might not be able to finish my work, but if I move forward while consulting with my colleagues, it seems like it'll work out somehow. Since I'll have more days off, I should also have more time to spend with my family, so I'm looking forward to it. If it goes well, I'd love to meet up and tell you all about it in detail.

A Future Where You Pay With Your Face

Starting this month, an unmanned store where customers can shop using only facial recognition has begun a trial in a shopping district in Tokyo. If a customer registers their face on their smartphone in advance, payment is completed simply by taking the items and leaving the store, without lining up at the register. According to the store manager, since the system was introduced, customers' waiting time has greatly decreased. On the other hand, quite a few people feel uneasy about how their personal information will be managed. The debate over which should be prioritized—convenience or safety—is still ongoing.

  • "〜によると" indicates the source of information, meaning "according to ~." It is often followed by hearsay expressions such as そうだ or という at the end of the sentence.
  • "〜ずに" has the same meaning as "〜ないで," expressing that one action is performed without doing something else first. It has a somewhat more written or formal nuance.
  • "〜べきか" (from "〜すべきか") expresses facing the question of whether one ought to do something, implying that a judgment or decision still needs to be made.

A Change in the Sea

An old fisherman who has fished for many years feels that in recent years, the types of fish caught in his nets have clearly changed. He thinks it is probably because the water temperature is rising, since fish from southern waters that he never used to see are now mixed in more often. For a fisherman who has made judgments based on years of experience, this change in nature is a reality he cannot ignore. In order to keep living alongside the sea from now on, he has no choice but to search for new fishing methods.

  • '〜てきた' expresses that a change or action has been gradually progressing up to the present moment, often implying a continuing trend.
  • '〜をもとに' means 'based on' or 'using ~ as a foundation,' indicating that a judgment or action is grounded in certain experience or information.
  • '〜ざるを得ない' means 'cannot help but do ~' or 'have no choice but to do ~,' expressing an action taken out of necessity despite reluctance.
