How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

のパン

えきまえのしょうてんがいに、ちいさなパンやがある。てんいんのはなしによると、このパンやは20ねんまえからつづいているそうだ。わたしはあさ、さんぽするたびに、そこでパンをかうことにしている。やきたてのパンはかおりがつよければつよいほど、おいしくかんじられる。きょうはとくべつにあたらしいメロンパンがうられていて、おもわずふたつかってしまった。

文法

  • 「〜によると」は情報の出どころを示す表現で、「〜が言うところによれば」という意味を表す。
  • 「〜たびに」は「〜するときはいつも」という意味で、繰り返される出来事を表す表現。
  • 「〜ば〜ほど」は、ある事柄の程度が進むにつれて別の事柄も進むことを表す表現。
  • 「〜てしまった」は、意図せずに、または思わずそうしてしまったという気持ちを表す表現。

The Bakery in Front of the Station

There is a small bakery in the shopping street in front of the station. According to the shop staff, this bakery has been running since 20 years ago. Every time I go for a morning walk, I make it a habit to buy bread there. Freshly baked bread tastes more delicious the stronger its aroma is. Today they happened to be selling a special new melon bun, and without thinking I ended up buying two.

  • 「〜によると」cites the source of information, meaning 'according to ~'.
  • 「〜たびに」means 'every time ~ happens', expressing a recurring situation.
  • 「〜ば〜ほど」expresses that as one thing changes, another changes accordingly, meaning 'the more ~, the more ~'.
  • 「〜てしまった」expresses that something happened unintentionally or with a sense of regret/surprise.
