How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

としょかんでのべんきょう

いよいよなつやすみがはじまり、わたしはちかくのとしょかんへべんきょうにいくことにした。としょかんのししょによると、このじきはがくせいでとてもこんざつするそうだ。じっさい、しずかなせきをみつけるたびに、すぐにだれかがすわってしまう。それでも、しゅうちゅうしてべんきょうできるかんきょうのおかげで、おもったよりはやくかだいがおわった。らいしゅうからはゆうじんといっしょにいくことになった。

文法

  • 「〜(に)によると」は情報じょうほうの出でどころを示しめす表現ひょうげんで、「〜が言いうところによれば」という意味いみを表あらわす。
  • 「〜たびに」は「〜するときはいつも」という意味いみで、繰くり返かえされる出来事できごとを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜おかげで」は、あることが原因げんいんでよい結果けっかが生うまれたことを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜ことになった」は、話はなし手て自身じしんの意志いしではなく、状況じょうきょうや周まわりの決定けっていによって、そうなったことを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。自分じぶんで決きめた「〜ことにした」とは対照的たいしょうてきである。

Studying at the Library

Summer vacation has finally begun, and I decided to go study at a nearby library. According to the librarian, this time of year gets very crowded with students. In fact, every time I find a quiet seat, someone sits down right away. Even so, thanks to the concentration-friendly environment, I finished my homework faster than expected. Starting next week, it has been decided that I'll go there together with a friend.

  • 「〜によると」cites the source of information, meaning 'according to ~'.
  • 「〜たびに」means 'every time ~ happens', expressing a recurring situation.
  • 「〜おかげで」expresses a positive result caused by something, meaning 'thanks to ~'.
  • 「〜ことになった」expresses that something has been decided or turned out to be the case, often by circumstances rather than the speaker's own will, contrasting with 「〜ことにした」 which shows the speaker's own decision.
