How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

かわつりのおもいで

なつやすみになると、わたしはそふとちかくのかわへつりにいくことにしている。そふのはなしによると、このかわではむかしからおおきなさかながよくつれるそうだ。ことしはあめがすくなかったせいで、みずがとてもすんでいて、さかなのすがたがよくみえた。つりをするたびに、なかなかさかながかからず、がっかりすることもあるが、きょうははじめておおきなあゆをつることができた。うれしくて、おもわずおおきなこえをだしてしまった。らいねんもまたそふといっしょにつりにいくつもりだ。

文法

  • 「~(に)によると」は情報じょうほうの出でどころを示しめす表現ひょうげんで、「~が言いうところによれば」という意味いみを表あらわす。
  • 「~たびに」は「~するときはいつも」という意味いみで、繰くり返かえされる出来事できごとを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「~せいで」は、望のぞましくない結果けっかの原因げんいんを表あらわす表現ひょうげんで、「~が原因げんいんで悪わるい結果けっかになった」という意味いみを持もつ。
  • 「~てしまった」は、意図いとせずに、または思おもわずそうしてしまったという気持きもちを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。

A Memory of River Fishing

Every summer vacation, I go fishing with my grandfather at a nearby river. According to my grandfather, big fish have always been caught in this river. This year, because there was little rain, the water was very clear, and I could clearly see the fish. Every time I go fishing, I often get frustrated because I can't catch anything, but today I managed to catch a big sweetfish for the first time. I was so happy that I unintentionally let out a loud shout. Next year, I plan to go fishing with my grandfather again.

  • 「~によると」cites the source of information, meaning 'according to ~'.
  • 「~たびに」means 'every time ~ happens', expressing a recurring situation.
  • 「~せいで」expresses the cause of an undesirable result, meaning 'because of ~ (something negative happened)'.
  • 「~てしまった」expresses that something happened unintentionally or with a sense of surprise.
