How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

いそがしいひびなかはじめたジョギング

たけしさんへ おげんきですか。じつせんげつから、しごとあいまにジョギングをはじめました。まいにちざんぎょうつづくあまり、からだうごかすじかんがなくなり、たいりょくていかしんぱいになったのです。まよったすえに、ちかくのこうえんまいあさはしることにめました。どうりょうに「そんなにはやきるなんてたいへんだね」とおどろかれるほど、からだかるくなったのをかんじています。こんどいっしょはしってみませんか。

文法

  • 「~あまり」は、程度ていどはなはだしいことが原因げんいんで、のぞましくない結果けっかこることをあらわ表現ひょうげんで、「~すぎて」という意味いみちかい。
  • 「~すえに」は、なが時間じかん努力どりょくて、最終的さいしゅうてきにある結果けっかいたったことをあらわ表現ひょうげん
  • 「~ほど」は、ある状態じょうたい程度ていどがどれくらいかを、具体的ぐたいてきれいげてあらわ表現ひょうげんで、「~くらい」という意味いみつ。

Jogging I Started Amid Busy Days

Dear Takeshi, How are you? Actually, I started jogging last month during breaks from work. Because I kept working overtime every day, I had no time to exercise, and I began to worry about my declining physical strength. After much hesitation, I decided to run every morning in a nearby park. My coworker was so surprised—saying, 'Getting up that early is impressive!'—that I've really come to feel my body getting lighter. Would you like to run together sometime?

  • 「~あまり」means 'because ~ (to an excessive degree)', showing that an undesirable result occurs due to something being done to an extreme extent.
  • 「~末に」means 'after ~' or 'finally, after a long process of ~', indicating that a final result was reached after considerable time or effort.
  • 「~ほど」expresses the degree of something by giving a concrete example, meaning 'to the extent that ~' or 'so much that ~'.
