How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

みずだしコーヒーのつくりかた

なつになると、みずだしコーヒーをつくるひとがふえる。つくりかたはかんたんで、まずこなをようきにいれ、みずをそそいでからそのままれいぞうこでひとばんおく。こなのりょうをはからずにてきとうにいれると、あじがうすくなりすぎるのでちゅういしたほうがいい。また、コーヒーがこすぎるとかんじたときは、みずをすこしくわえればのみやすくなる。じかんをかけてつくるからこそ、まろやかなあじになるのだといわれている。

文法

  • 「〜てから」は、ある動作どうさを終おえた後あとに、次つぎの動作どうさを行おこなうことを表あらわす表現ひょうげんで、二ふたつの動作どうさの順序じゅんじょを明確めいかくに示しめす。
  • 「〜たほうがいい」は、相手あいてや自分じぶんに対たいして、そうすることを勧すすめる気持きもちを表あらわす表現ひょうげんで、「〜する方ほうが良よい」という意味いみを持もつ。
  • 動詞どうしや形容詞けいようしの語幹ごかんに「〜すぎる」がつくと、程度ていどが普通ふつうの範囲はんいを超こえていることを表あらわす表現ひょうげんになる。
  • 「〜からこそ」は、理由りゆうを特とくに強つよく指さし示しめし、「まさにその理由りゆうのために」という意味いみを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。

How to Make Cold Brew Coffee

When summer comes, more people start making cold brew coffee. The method is simple: first put the coffee grounds into a container, pour in water, and then leave it in the refrigerator overnight just like that. If you put in the grounds carelessly without measuring the amount, the flavor can end up too weak, so it's best to be careful. Also, if the coffee tastes too strong, adding a little water makes it easier to drink. It is said that it is precisely because it's made by taking time that the flavor becomes so mellow.

  • 「~てから」 expresses that one action is performed after completing another, clearly indicating the sequence of two actions, meaning 'after doing ~'.
  • 「~たほうがいい」expresses a recommendation to oneself or others, meaning 'it's better to ~' or 'you should ~'.
  • Attaching 「~すぎる」to the stem of a verb or adjective expresses that something exceeds a normal or appropriate degree, meaning 'too much ~' or 'excessively ~'.
  • 「~からこそ」emphasizes a reason strongly, meaning 'precisely because ~' or 'it is exactly for this reason that ~'.
