The Legend of the Well That Never Runs Dry
Long ago, in a mountain village, there was a well that never ran dry no matter how long the drought continued. Villagers have passed down the story that the old man who dug the well, after years of continuous prayer, finally received water from the mountain god. In reality, it may simply be gathering water from deep between the rocks, but to the villagers it was surely a gift from the god. Even today this well never runs dry, and not only in dry summers but throughout the year, it continues to support the life of the village.
- "~末に" expresses that after a long period of time or hardship, one finally reaches a certain result, meaning 'after ~' or 'finally, as a result of ~'.
- "~に限らず" means 'not limited to ~' or 'not only ~, but also', expressing that something applies beyond a certain specific case.
- "~ことなく" is a somewhat literary expression meaning 'without ever ~ing', expressing that another action or state continues while a certain action never occurs.
