How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

さんそんにとどくドローンびん

せんげつから、ながのけんのあるさんそんで、ドローンをつかったかいものだいこうサービスがはじまった。ちかくにみせがないため、こうれいしゃはいままでかぞくにたのむか、とおくまででかけるしかなかった。このサービスでは、でんわでちゅうもんするだけで、ひつようなしなものがドローンによってじたくまでとどけられる。りようしゃがふえるにともなって、たいおうできるしょうひんのしゅるいもひろがりつつあるという。このサービスはこうれいしゃのみならず、こそだてちゅうのかていにもよろこばれている。

文法

  • 「〜しかなかった」は、他たの選択せんたく肢しがなく、それしか方法ほうほうがなかったことを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜に伴ともなって」は、前まえの事柄ことがらの変化へんかに応おうじて、それと同時どうじに別べつの変化へんかが起おこることを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜のみならず」は、「〜だけでなく」という意味いみで、ある範囲はんいにとどまらず、それ以外いがいにも当あてはまることを表あらわす、やや書かき言葉ことば的てきな表現ひょうげん。

Drone Delivery Reaches a Mountain Village

Last month, a mountain village in Nagano Prefecture began a shopping delivery service using drones. Since there were no shops nearby, elderly residents until now had no choice but to ask family members or travel far to shop. With this service, all one needs to do is place an order by phone, and the needed items are delivered to the home by drone. As the number of users increases, the variety of products the service can handle is said to be expanding as well. The service is appreciated not only by elderly residents but also by families raising young children.

  • "~しかなかった" expresses that there was no other choice and that was the only option available, meaning 'had no choice but to ~' or 'the only option was ~'.
  • "~に伴って" means 'along with ~' or 'as ~ changes', expressing that a change in one thing brings about a corresponding change in another.
  • "~のみならず" means 'not only ~ but also', a somewhat literary expression indicating that something extends beyond a certain scope to include additional cases.
