Exhibits at a Small Local History Museum
Last week, I visited a local history museum that had just opened near my neighborhood. Just because admission is free doesn't mean the quality of the exhibits is low—Edo-period maps and tools were explained carefully. The staff member who guided me told me that most of the materials had been donated by local residents. The building still uses an old elementary school as it is, and the lingering classroom atmosphere was also charming. Despite being a small-scale museum, the exhibit content was very substantial, so this is a place I really want anyone interested in history to visit.
- "~からといって" expresses that one should not jump to a conclusion based solely on the preceding reason, meaning 'just because ~', and is often followed by phrases like "~わけではない" ('that doesn't mean ~').
- "~わけではない" is a partial negation, expressing that something is not necessarily true as a whole, meaning 'it doesn't mean that ~' or 'not necessarily ~'.
- "~わりに" means 'considering ~' or 'for ~', expressing that the actual degree of something is unexpectedly higher or lower than what one would predict based on a given standard.
