How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

まき:「くみ、ギター、まだひいてるの?かったのははんとしまえだよね。」 くみ:「じつは、いそがしさにもかかわらずれんしゅうしようとはおもってるんだけど、なかなかじかんがとれなくて。」 まき:「じかんがないというくせに、どうがばかりみてるじゃない。」 くみ:「うっ、それは…。でもどうがをみているおかげで、コードのおさえかただけじゃなく、リズムのとりかたまでわかるようになったんだよ。」 まき:「じゃあ、らいしゅうはじっさいにおとをだしてひいてみせてよ。」 くみ:「わかった、やくそくする。」

文法

  • 「〜にもかかわらず」は、ある事実じじつや状況じょうきょうがあるにもかかわらず、それに反はんすることが起おこることを表あらわす表現ひょうげんで、「〜のに」よりも硬かたい言いい方かた。
  • 「〜くせに」は、相手あいての言葉ことばや様子ようすと実際じっさいの行動こうどうが矛盾むじゅんしていることを指摘してきする表現ひょうげんで、非難ひなんやからかいの気持きもちを含ふくむことが多おおい。
  • 「〜だけじゃなく」は「〜だけでなく」のくだけた言いい方かたで、あるものにとどまらず、それ以外いがいのものも当あてはまることを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。

The Guitar From Half a Year Ago

Maki: "Kumi, are you still playing the guitar? You bought it half a year ago, right?" Kumi: "Actually, despite being busy, I keep meaning to practice, but I just can't find the time." Maki: "You say you don't have time, but you're always just watching videos." Kumi: "Ugh, that's... But thanks to watching those videos, I've come to understand not only how to hold the chords but also how to keep rhythm." Maki: "Then next week, actually play it out loud and show me." Kumi: "Okay, I promise."

  • "~にもかかわらず" means 'despite ~' or 'in spite of ~', expressing that something happens even though a contrasting circumstance exists.
  • "~くせに" means 'even though ~', used to point out a contradiction between someone's words or appearance and their actual behavior, often with a critical or teasing tone.
  • "~だけじゃなく" (a casual form of ~だけでなく) means 'not only ~ but also ~', indicating that something extends beyond a single item to include another as well.
