  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

My First Attempt at Baking Bread

Yui: "Yesterday I tried baking bread for the first time, but even though I gathered all the ingredients, I didn't know how long the fermentation should take, so in the end it came out hard." Sora: "That's a shame. But it's impressive that you tried so hard for your first time. Personally, I wouldn't even think of going out early in the morning just to buy ingredients to make bread." Yui: "Actually, I couldn't just throw away the failed bread, so I forced myself to eat all of it." Sora: "Isn't that bad for you? Next time you should properly follow the recipe."

  • "~ものの" means 'although ~' or 'even though ~', acknowledging a fact while introducing a contrasting result, similar to but slightly more formal than '~けれども'.

  • "~わけにはいかない" expresses that, given the circumstances, responsibility, or common sense, one cannot or is not allowed to do a certain thing, meaning 'cannot afford to ~' or 'can't just ~'.
