  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

A Fresh Wind at the Morning Running Class

Since last month, the number of participants in an early-morning running class held at a nearby park has been steadily increasing. It used to be mostly older people, but recently more office workers who want to move their bodies before heading to work have been showing up. According to Tamura-san, who leads the class, people with busy daily lives especially say that running actually clears their heads. However, as the number of participants grows, the narrow paths are becoming harder to run on, so a review of the course is being considered.

  • "~つつある" means 'is gradually ~ing', expressing that a change is currently in progress and advancing little by little. It's a somewhat literary expression often used in news reports.
  • "~によると" indicates the source of information, meaning 'according to ~', and the sentence often ends with expressions like '~そうだ' or '~という' to show the content came from that source.
  • "~がちだ" means 'tends to ~' or 'is prone to ~', expressing a tendency that easily occurs, often used for undesirable tendencies.
