  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

A Find at the Secondhand Bookstore

Last week, on a friend's recommendation, I visited a secondhand bookstore tucked deep in a residential area. Small as it was, the shop had a unique atmosphere, with shelves packed with books up to the ceiling. Not only were the prices low, but the owner carefully explained each book to me, so choosing took longer than I expected. I couldn't find the book I originally wanted, but instead I unexpectedly picked up a rare photo book. I'm a little curious about what I'll discover there next time.

  • "~だけあって" means 'being that ~' or 'as one would expect from ~', indicating that a result matches a characteristic or condition, often carrying a sense of admiration or understanding.
  • "~上に" means 'in addition to ~' or 'not only ~ but also', adding a further point on top of what was already stated.
  • Question word + ~のか embeds an unresolved question within a sentence, followed by the speaker's feeling or comment about that uncertain matter, meaning 'wondering what/whether ~'.
