A Visit to an Old Map Exhibition
Last week, I went to see an exhibition of old maps at a small local history museum in town. Even though the admission fee was on the high side, the exhibition was so absorbing that I forgot the time. Some Edo-period maps showed roads in almost the same places as today's roads, and imagining the lives of people back then, I found myself stopping without realizing it. Because the explanations were so detailed, it took quite a while to finish reading them all. It's not that photography is prohibited, so it's a good idea to capture any map you're interested in with your camera.
- "~にもかかわらず" means 'despite ~' or 'even though ~', expressing that the actual result goes against what would normally be expected from the preceding fact; it is a more formal equivalent of '~のに'.
- "~だけに" indicates that precisely because of a certain special circumstance or condition, a fitting or expected result appears all the more strongly, meaning 'precisely because ~' or 'given that ~, all the more so'.
- "~わけではない" expresses a partial negation, meaning 'it's not that ~' or 'that doesn't necessarily mean ~', without completely denying the preceding statement.
