How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

Days at Calligraphy Class

Since this spring, I've been attending a calligraphy class held at the nearby community center. It had been a long time since I'd held a brush, and at first, just drawing a single line made my hand shake. My teacher kept telling me to relax, but no matter how many times I tried, the brush wouldn't move the way I wanted, and I made little progress. Still, after half a year of practice, I finally reached the point last week where I could show the single character "無" (nothingness) in front of others. Every time I look at my own handwriting, I feel as if my heart, too, has gradually grown calmer.

  • ~までになる means 'reach the point of ~', expressing that through accumulated effort or time, one has arrived at a certain level or state that wasn't possible before.
  • ~ような気がする means 'I have a feeling that ~' or 'it seems like ~', expressing a subjective impression without clear evidence.
