How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

したまちのラーメンや

せんしゅう、ゆうじんにさそわれて、したまちにあるちいさなラーメンやにいってみた。みせはふるいわりに、なかはせいけつで、カウンターせきだけのおちついたふんいきだった。ちゅうもんしたしょうゆラーメンは、みためがシンプルなわりに、スープのあじがふかく、まるでなんじかんもにこんだかのようなこくがあった。てんしゅがひとりできりもりしているからこそ、いっぱいいっぱいにこころがこもっているのだろう。ねだんもてごろで、ちかくにきたさいには、またよってみたい。

文法

  • 「〜わりに」は、前まえの事柄ことがらから予想よそうされる程度ていどと比くらべて、実際じっさいはそれほどでもない、あるいはそれ以上いじょうであることを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。
  • 「〜からこそ」は、理由りゆうを強つよく強調きょうちょうする表現ひょうげんで、「まさにその理由りゆうによって」という意味いみを持もつ。
  • 「〜かのようだ」は、実際じっさいにはそうではないが、まるでそうであるかのように感かんじられる様子ようすを表あらわす表現ひょうげん。

A Ramen Shop in the Old Town

Last week, a friend invited me along, and I went to try a small ramen shop in the old part of town. Despite its old appearance, the inside was clean, with a calm atmosphere of counter seats only. The soy sauce ramen I ordered looked simple, but the soup's flavor was deep, with a richness as if it had been simmered for hours. Precisely because the owner runs the place alone, each and every bowl must be made with care. The price was also reasonable, so next time I'm in the area, I'd like to stop by again.

  • ~わりに means 'considering ~' or 'for ~', expressing that the actual degree of something differs from what one would expect based on a preceding fact—either less or more than anticipated.
  • ~からこそ means 'precisely because ~', strongly emphasizing that a particular reason, and no other, is the true cause of something.
  • ~かのようだ means 'as if ~', describing something that gives the impression of being a certain way even though that is not actually the case.
