How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

としょかんのなつ

なつやすみになると、わたしはまいにちとしょかんにいきます。としょかんはとてもしずかで、しゅうちゅうしてほんがよめます。せんしゅうは、うちゅうについてのほんをさんさつかりました。よみおわったら、ともだちにかんそうをつたえるやくそくをしています。ことしのなつも、たくさんのほんとであいたいです。

文法

  • 「~(と)、~」は「~(に)なると、~」の形かたちで、「~(に)なるといつも~(が)起おこる」という一般いっぱん的てきな関係かんけいを表あらわします。
  • 「~(た)ら」は「~(た)ら、~」の形かたちで、ある動作どうさが終おわった後あとに次つぎに起おこることを表あらわします。
  • 「~(て)います」は今いま進すす行こう中ちゅうの動作どうさだけでなく、約束やくそくなどの続つづいている状態じょうたいも表あらわします。
  • 「~(た)い」は動詞どうしの形かたちを変かえてつけることで、話はなし手て自身じしんが「~(し)たい」という気き持もちを表あらわします。

A Summer at the Library

Whenever summer vacation comes, I go to the library every day. The library is very quiet, so I can concentrate and read books there. Last week, I borrowed three books about the universe. Once I finish reading them, I've promised to tell my friend what I thought about them. This summer too, I want to encounter lots of books.

  • The pattern 'X になると Y' means 'whenever X happens, Y happens' — a general, repeated conditional relationship.
  • '~たら' expresses 'when/after doing something', describing what happens next once an action is completed.
  • '~ています' here shows an ongoing plan or promise, not just an action happening right now.
  • '~たい' attaches to a verb stem to express the speaker's own desire to do something.
