How to use

Designed to help you progress once you’re comfortable with the basics. Use it as supplementary material alongside your studies.

Pick a school grade or JLPT level and do this each day:

  1. Handwrite the passage in a notebook.
  2. Read the passage out loud.
  3. Understand the meaning of the passage (if you need help, check the English translation).
  4. Take note of the grammar points (try understanding them in Japanese first; if you need help, refer to the English translation).

にわの ねこ

いえの にわに ちいさな ねこが います。しろくて、めが ぴかぴか ひかって います。ねこは じっと そらを みて います。なにか みえて いるのかな。かわいいね。

文法

  • 「が」は ぶんの しゅごを しめす ときに つかう ことばです。
  • 「〜て(て)います」は いま して いる ことを いう ときの かたちです。
  • ぶんの おわりに つける「ね」は、あいての ひとに「そう おもうでしょ？」と つたえる ことばです。

The Cat in the Garden

There is a small cat in the garden. It is white, and its eyes sparkle and shine. The cat is gazing quietly up at the sky. I wonder if it can see something. How cute!

  • 「が」 is used to mark the subject of a sentence — the thing or person doing the action or being described.
  • 「~ています」 describes something that is happening right now or a continuing state.
  • 「~ね」 at the end of a sentence invites the listener to agree, like saying 'isn't it?' or 'right?'

こうえんのねこ

うちのちかくにちいさなこうえんがあります。そのこうえんにはふるいきがいっぽんあって、まいにちねこがいっぴきそのしたでねています。きょう、わたしはそのねこにちかづいてみました。でも、ねこはめをあけずにうごきませんでした。とてもきちよさそうで、すこしうらやましかったです。

文法

  • 「〜ています」は今いまも続つづいている状態じょうたいや動作どうさを表あらわします。
  • 「〜ので」は理由りゆうや原因げんいんを表あらわします。「〜だから」と似にています。
  • 「〜てみる」はためしに何なにかをすることを表あらわします。

The Cat in the Park

Near my house there is a small park. In that park there is an old tree, and every day a cat sleeps under it. Today I tried walking up to the cat. But it didn't move or open its eyes at all. It looked so comfortable that I felt just a little envious.

  • 〜ています expresses an ongoing state or the result of an action that continues into the present.
  • 〜ので gives a reason or cause, similar to 'because' or 'so'.
  • 〜てみる means to try doing something, to see what it is like.
